Raw Food Survey!

Wednesday, February 27

A while ago I created a survey for people interested in or following a raw food diet, and who are located in Perth.

So far I have 17 respondents, but there must be more people in Perth interested in raw food! At any raw food talk I attend, I see a different group of faces and I’m fascinated by the diversity and curious to know who they are!

Assuming that you’re reading my blog for a reason and that you have either a fleeting interest in or are a raw foodist, then I would greatly appreciated it if you would complete my survey:

URL:  http://tinyurl.com/yo3tcm

Password: rawfood

Please only complete if you are already interested in raw food, but you don’t have to be eating a raw diet.

Thanks everyone!  Time for me to go to bed now, it’s 1:30am!

Detoxing Again

Tuesday, February 26

Yesterday I had my first day of 100% raw in several weeks. Some days, I may have had some water crackers and dip or other days gone out for a cooked vegan meal. However, I’ve noticed myself becoming sicker and more “urgh” - for example, a sore throat and stuffy nose.

I am going well today also, having a bok choy based Green Smoothie which was very sweet and a nice change from spinach, foraging on nuts and goji’s throughout the day. Although, to go with my nuts for lunch I did buy a 100% fruit juice - a Nudie, which has been pasteurised, and I had some Edamame soy beans which are lightly blanched. I really need to better prepare my lunches!

I even kept a Himalayan Salt Lamp on overnight, ionising the air while I slept.

This afternoon I am feeling incredibly lethargic, and could just go home and sleep. I feel like I’m back to square one, and need to go through the whole detox again - although at least this time I’m better off to begin with.

I wonder how long it will take before I feel like I’m jumping out of my skin again?

My Messy Pantry

Sunday, February 24

The last two weeks have been insanely busy, keeping me away from home, eating healthy and even blogging.

I have now had 3 sessions of personal training. My trainer is very kind and not pushing me too hard yet, she must be playing “nice”! The first session was great, and I felt so incredibly energised after it - even if I was a little achy. The second session was good too, and I wrote down what equipment I used and the exact exercises… but I can’t find it right now. Both those times, I didn’t have much solid food before the session. First one, I had a mango and a celery stalk and for the second one I had a green smoothie. Both times I had extreme reflux-like feeling in my throat after the workout, and went home and vomited.

Before the third session, last Thursday, I had a vegan nut bar that was mostly raw - raw nuts, agave nectar etc - before the session as I was running late. I had little sleep the night before and not much chance to warm up on the treadmill beforehand, so I felt incredibly weak and tired. I had also eaten cooked food the night before - long story about that, but I so don’t want to be doing that anymore. However, afterwards although my whole body felt a little shaky this nut bar actually stayed down and I didn’t feel as sick as before. I’m on the hunt now for some good raw breakfast bar recipes!

I haven’t lost any weight yet while exercising, in fact I haven’t lost anything for a few weeks - if not gained some grams (not kilos thankfully). As this fortnight has only been about 50% raw foods, I attribute the weight stagnation to that. I’ve also had a thick head and sore throat, been phlegmy and even had people comment that I sound like I’m getting a cold. I am in major need of a detox, and would so love to go on retreat again.

One reason I’ve been eating so badly is because the kitchen, pantry and fridge have been a mess and I haven’t been able to prepare anything, and we’ve been getting home from work late and too tired to sort things out. So today has been my catch up day: I’ve reorganised the pantry, accounted for whats “in stock”, and cleaned the fridge. I’m now waiting for Chris to slowly plod through the dishes so I can prepare some foods for dehydration.

When Chris and I first went raw last July, we cleared out the cupboard and fridge of all non-raw foods (ie: everything) and went on a raw food cooking retreat. This was fantastic for discipline as on the way home we stopped by a fruit a veg market and, with recipes fresh in our minds, bought everything we would need for the week.

This went well until recently when it became so messy that we couldn’t find anything, and looking in the cupboard to decide what we wanted to dinner resulted in us depressed and completely uninspired.

Here’s the before shot:

My Messy Pantry

As you can see, it had some non-raw products remnant in it - namely the Optifast on the top shelf, which I tried once a long time ago when I was still vego, hated, but haven’t thrown out.

I’m relatively short (163cm-ish) and so need to step on tippy-toes to reach the top shelf, and crouch to get to the bottom and second shelves. That leaves me with little space to reach the things I may need to quickly get.

Check out the transformation:

My Tidy Pantry

On the bottom shelf, I have some picnic gear including a basket which I also use for our grocery shopping. I keep our other non-plastic bags in there also, so I can easily grab it and go to the shops.

Second shelf is for liquids: oils, vinegar, a couple of jar items (mustard and jalapenos) and agave nectar. The things I often need are visible when looking down from my height and easy to grab if I’ve also got a hand full of vegies on my way to the cutting board. Beyond that are unopened bottles of olive oil (we have 3 bottles at the moment, which should last a while) and other things not necessary on a daily basis.

The third shelf is for our herbs and spices, and powered items. Here we have our Maca, Mesquite and Spirulina - all together ready for breakfast (green smoothies). We bought a box of Maxwell House Spice Jars, to compliment a spice wheel that we received for a wedding present. To keep things nicely arranged and so they don’t fall down, I’ve kept the box and have put the jars I don’t need regularly in there (as I cannot see the labels). I didn’t want an ugly branded box in the cupboard, so I have covered it with some hand made paper that I had left over from a Christmas present I received.

I’ve got my dried fruits, sea vegetables, cacao and carob on the next shelf. There is also space if I do need to chuck something in quickly, as you can see in the before picture once you start chucking things in you can’t stop - so by making this area for it hopefully I’ll be inclined to keep it tidy!

Top shelf is padded with a couple of cane baskets to put in excess produce (like the last of Chris’ 3kg bag of Macadamias) and to stop the front containers from pushing backwards out of my reach. I’ve got our bulk nuts like Almonds, Walnuts etc on this shelf.

After doing all this, and cleaning out the fridge, we went and bought some lovely fresh fruit & veg, so now I feel inspired to do some (un)cooking! I think Chris’ is done washing the dishes!

Beginning Personal Training

Wednesday, February 13

Tomorrow, I’ll be hopping on the scales for the first time at the gym, and I’m very anxious to see how different they are to the home scales - which have been plummeting up and down the same 5kgs for the last 2 weeks. Chris and I will begin the day by going down to the beach for a walk at sunrise and then enjoying a fruit platter breakfast at the Wild Fig Cafe. After work, we will go to the gym to meet my Personal Trainer and to receive our first assessment. It will be Valentines Day - perhaps a day to fall in love with my body as it is an begin some true healing? Hmm… that sounded cheezy.

I had been emailing one of the managers for a few weeks, asking 1001 questions about what they offer and how they treat their clients. I was a member of a gym a few years ago, lost a little bit of weight and felt great, until they oversold memberships and a lot of show-offs started attending, which made me feel very self conscious so I stopped going.

So I met with this manager last week, and she was very warm and inviting. As the gym is based at a University, many trainers are studying Human Movement or Sports Science and so their knowledge is fresh and they have new ideas. The equipment was very high quality and the atmosphere very open. The additional benefit of being based on campus is that they have people from all walks of life and not just the “gym-junkies”.

So, tomorrow I have my first assessment and then I’m going directly into it with my first session on Friday morning. I’m nervous but very excited too!

In regards to diet, I’ve been a naughty raw vegan. I’ve been having a bread roll for lunch the last few days as I’ve been too disorganised to make a proper healthy lunch in the mornings. I really notice the effect that gluten has on me, such as a constant sore throat feeling, greasy skin and becoming sluggish shortly after lunch. These were all things that I had completely alleviate when 100% raw. I’m feeling now that I will need to do a short water fast or something to begin healing my body. The unfortunate thing is that I have now undone some of the detox I went through last year. I will take action, beginning now.

As for the 21-Day Challenge… well, I didn’t complete it. I might start again by myself though. I’m my own worst enemy, setting the goal to wake up at 5am and exercise every morning but contradicting myself by writing this blog post at 12:40am!

Before I go, I just want to give a shout out to my friend Robin, to say thanks for commenting on my blog and to say it’s great to see you’re going well. Robin has had a tough year finding out that he has a rare heart disease and going through heart surgery - he’s only early 30’s and has a wife and 3 young children to care for. It is wonderful to read that he is recovering and doing well to become fit and healthy… don’t think I can convince him to eat raw though! Keep at it mate, I know its hard to change a well-worn lifestyle but it can be done, and you have friends and your family with you all the way!

I’m still here

Wednesday, February 6

Well, thought I should post to let you know I’m still alive and kicking :)

I haven’t posted in quite a while, having been away last weekend and then having an extremely busy week and a half at work that I was just too tired to get online at home.

Everything is going well. Raw, not so much - but mainly because of one major lesson I have learned in the last few days: if you have been eating healthy raw food for months, your body will not like you if you fill it with a deadly mix of beer, wine, schnapps and cocktails. Hmm, yes I have been a very naughty girl and I am seriously paying the price for it. This occurred on Monday night, when I attended a function with a catering company I work part time for. We all took advantage of the free alcohol and endless top-ups, and after a few drinks logic goes out the window.

After this experience, I am really going to vow giving up alcohol completely. I don’t need it for a good time and there is no reason why I drunk it except that everyone else was doing so, and it certainly doesn’t give me a good feeling!

So, apart from that I am going very well. I have been in contact with a local gym, have joined up and I am beginning Personal Training sessions next week! This is such a huge leap ahead for me. I have had a gym membership a few years ago, but stopped going when it because very busy and the patronage turned from those who wanted to get fit to a gym-junkie sideshow. It was very uncomfortable, especially for those low in self-esteem so I stopped going.

This time, I am really looked forward to working one on one with a trainer who can address my specific needs and who I can feel more confident with. In addition to this, my exercise program will combine walking, Pilates, and cardio work on my home cross trainer. I’m not only determined to lose weight, but I want to be fit too and be confident that I can keep the weight off!

To keep me in line I’ve joined Traineo, a Fitness and Weight Loss community. When you sign up, you can elect people to be your motivators. These people receive a weekly update of your progress, so you will have someone to be accountable to. So, if anyone wants to be my motivator join Traineo and let me know! In return, I am happy to be a motivator to anyone else who feels they need someone to share their fitness and weight loss goals with!

There is even a Raw Food community!

It would be so great to connect with some of you who are also wanting to get fit or become raw, so please join and let me know!
